For 18 years, The Bronx Defenders’ interdisciplinary teams of criminal, family, civil, and immigration attorneys, social workers, advocates, and investigators have zealously defended the accused, reunified parents with their children, and provided innovative, holistic advocacy that addresses the enmeshed penalties of court involvement.
This past year has been marked by tremendous growth. With more than 250 advocates now on staff, we have bolstered our existing services and launched several new initiatives that offer creative solutions to the complex challenges faced by our clients and their families. We have expanded our advocacy in the New York Immigrant Family Unity Project, created interdisciplinary working groups to address the needs of our clients facing mental health challenges, and published best practices for working with veteran clients. The Bronx Freedom Fund has posted bail for over 200 of our clients, enabling them to avoid the devastating consequences of pre-trial detention. Our report “Voices from the Box” called attention to the systemic abuse of solitary confinement at Rikers Island, and our advocacy helped push the New York City Council to pass one of the most progressive “ban the box” laws in the country.
